Sarykamysh Lake
70% of the lake's water area belongs to Turkmenistan, the rest, in the northern and western parts, to Uzbekistan. The reservoir is located approximately in the middle between the Caspian and Aral Seas. Its dimensions are 120x40 km with an average depth of 8 m.
The lake has a very ancient history, it often disappeared and reappeared, being completely dependent on the Amu Darya. The endless cotton fields in Soviet times filled Sarykamysh with poisonous effluents. The modern reservoir received a significant portion of water in 1971 from an overflowing reservoir.
In subsequent years, its size fluctuated significantly. The lake serves as a habitat for many species of fish, 17 of which are of commercial importance. In the best years, the reservoir hosts up to 90 species of birds, including pelicans, swans and flamingos.
