Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker
The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is an active Orthodox church of the Tashkent and Uzbekistan Diocese of the Central Asian Metropolitan District of the Russian Orthodox Church, located in the city of Jizzakh in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The church was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
In 1900, a large Orthodox church built of red burnt brick was erected in the city of Jizzakh. The temple was built according to the project of engineer Heinzelman. This building is currently located in a small city park, near the house where the Russian governor lived in that historical period. In the 1930s, the Church in the named building was closed. Since then, the Orthodox church in this building has not operated. Later, a Nature Museum was located in this building, which is still operating in the building.
In 1932, Orthodox believers were allocated a new plot of land for the construction of a new church building. In 1947, the construction of a small new temple building, built of mud bricks, was completed. In 1947, the new church building was consecrated. According to A. Nezhny, who visited Jizzakh in the 80s, a dome was erected in the temple during the reconstruction. It is noted that this is the only Orthodox church in Jizzakh.
The first priest of the temple was Father Georgy Lugovenko, who served in the temple for about 20 years.
In 1975, Father Veniamin Burdin was appointed priest of the temple, who rebuilt the temple building. Veniamin Burdin was the rector of the temple for 14 years, until 1989. He was later transferred to Russia.
After him, Father Alexander Golikov was appointed rector of the temple, and later Father Alexander Bazanov. In March 1992, Archpriest Father Leonid Alesenko was appointed rector, who served as rector of the church until May 10, 1996. Later, the service in the church was conducted by priest Fr. Georgy Palekhov, who was temporarily seconded by the Tashkent Diocesan Administration. From February 20, 1997 to May 22, 2003, the rector of the church was priest Father Andrey Golovanov.
From December 1, 2003 to the present, the rector of the church is a clergyman, Father Nikolai Klimenko.
The patronal feast of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the city of Jizzakh is celebrated annually on May 22.
