University Boulevard

In the very center of Samarkand, the University Boulevard stretches for almost a kilometer from the Afrosiab and President hotels. In the shade of ancient trees, flocks of boys and girls with textbooks and notes in their hands flash by. After all, Samarkand State University, founded eighty years ago, is located in one of the ancient buildings that line the street. It is the largest and most prestigious of the six higher education institutions in the city. New academic and laboratory university buildings are located around the boulevard. Nearby is the building of the Samarkand Institute of Foreign Languages, where future translation guides study at the faculties.

University Boulevard, 128 meters wide, which can be the envy of any avenue in the capital, was laid in the 70s of the XIX century, shortly after the capture of Samarkand by tsarist Russia, and was then considered a kind of border between the old, historical part of the city and the new, "European". The city's administrative and banking center was formed here, built up with impressive buildings made of burnt, so-called "Nikolaevsky" brick. At the same time, young plane trees and oak trees were planted, which are now called century-old. In Turkestan, architects developed a special style that bizarrely combined European features and local traditions. The buildings around the boulevard, built in this style, are reminiscent of the first tsarist governor of the Samarkand region. The former governor's palace now houses the city's khokimiyat, the mayor's office.

Today, University Boulevard has become the educational and scientific center of Samarkand, the epitome of youth and the successful future of the country.
