Gate of Salakhkhon
The gate of Salakhkhon is one of the recognizable architectural symbols of Bukhara, located at the entrance to the old part of the city. The original gate was built in the 16th century during the reign of Abdullah Khan II and served as part of the city wall through which caravans of merchants and travelers passed.
During the Soviet era, the ancient gates were destroyed because they interfered with traffic. In 2012, they were recreated according to historical drawings, preserving the original shapes and ornaments of the Sheibanid era.
Today, the Salakhkhon Gate is an ornament of Bukhara and a popular tourist attraction. They symbolize the historical past of the city, recalling the time when Bukhara was an important center of the Great Silk Road.
