Karshinsky bridge

Karshinsky Bridge, also known by several names, including Amir Timur Bridge, Sheibanid Bridge, Kashkadarya Bridge and Nikolaevsky Bridge, is a remarkable example of architectural ingenuity and historical significance. Built in 1583, this ancient structure is still in use today, making it one of the oldest and largest bridges of its kind in Central Asia.

Built during the reign of Abdullah Khan II, the Karshi Bridge was designed to provide convenient passage for both pedestrians and merchant caravans. At that time, Karshi was an important stop for merchants traveling along the Silk Road. The bridge is built in a typical Persian style, incorporating elements of Islamic and Central Asian architecture. Its design is reminiscent of the famous Si-o-Se Pol Bridge over the Zayand River in Isfahan, Iran, although it lacks the second tier of arches present in its Iranian counterpart.

The Karshi Bridge, built mainly of brick and partly of stone, has large arches at both ends decorated in the Islamic-Persian style. The length of the bridge is 122 meters, the width is 8 meters, it rises 5 meters above the water and is supported by 10 arches.

The initiative to build the Karshi Bridge belonged to Abdullah Khan II, who realized the need for a reliable and durable crossing over the Kashkadarya River. This was crucial for maintaining the flow of trade and travel through the region. Over the centuries, the bridge has become a symbol of Karshi, undergoing numerous repairs due to seasonal river flooding.

Today, the Karshinsky Bridge is not only a historical monument, but also a vibrant part of the modern infrastructure of the city. Just a few dozen meters east of the bridge is a small dam built to regulate the river's water flow. Both banks of the Kashkadarya River near the bridge have been transformed into modern promenades with the charm of antiquity.

The area around the bridge has been transformed into a popular recreation area, including parks with entertainment areas, attractions, recreation areas and entertainment venues. This development has made the bridge a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. Several observation decks around the bridge offer scenic views, making it a photogenic attraction, especially at night when it is illuminated in different colors.

The Karshi Bridge is primarily a pedestrian bridge, and it is also accessible to cyclists. The movement of vehicles is prohibited, which ensures a safe and peaceful environment for visitors.
