The Assumption Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Mother of God, is the main Orthodox church in Tashkent and one of the most significant religious monuments in Uzbekistan. Construction of the cathedral began in 1877 on the site of a small cemetery church known as St. Panteleimon's Church. The church was originally built for the needs of a military hospital, which is why it was also called the "Hospital Church." Subsequently, it was expanded and became a cathedral. During the Soviet period, the temple, like many religious buildings, was closed, but in 1945 it was returned to believers and became operational again.
